The Tidewater School
Bringing Life to Learning

As mentors of their children, parents also need affirmation on their journey.  The staff at The Tidewater School seeks to present seminars that address the needs of the whole child AND the parent.  Our programs focus on the developmental needs of each child, the sequence of learning, the foundation for abstraction, and the health of the whole being.  We offer a separate 5 week course on positive discipline and parent empowerment.  We present the Adlerian model of discipline which encourages, empowers, and enables parents to be confident in their role.  Together, staff and parents examine the goals of both positive and negative behavior, understanding that our response often impacts the outcome.

Please see our calendar for when these classes are offered.

Seminar I:  Orientation to The Tidewater School:
Held the beginning of each year
This is an essential session for all families, whether new or old friends in our community.  It is at this gathering, both social and serious in tone, that we refresh our knowledge of philosophy, policies, and procedures.  This meeting provides a comprehensive overview of the school and an opportunity for answers to questions.

Seminar II:  Part I of The Silent Journey:  Mystical Discovery
On this evening, you will be invited to take a silent journey through the classrooms at The Tidewater School.  This is a special mystical evening of discovery, one that is sure to delight your senses and validate your investment in this excellent educational program.

Seminar II:  Part II of The Silent Journey:  Understanding the Discovery
We will work and talk about the Mystical Journey that you experienced the previous evening.

Seminar III: Please read the previous discussion as this is a repeat of that seminar series.
Part I:  The Silent Journey:  Mystical Discovery
Part II:  The Silent Journey:  Understanding the Discovery

Seminar IV:  Math Seminar (scheduled based upon parent need)
This session will provide all families with insight into the math program, inspiring greater respect for the process of learning for children as they first manipulate then graduate into higher level operations.  This seminar’s overview provides a start to finish examination of math at The Tidewater School.  It is a must for parents who long to support their child’s natural development of logical deductive reasoning skills.

Seminar V:  Reading and Language (scheduled based upon parent need)
The world of reading and language involves much more than the written word.  Once again, the staff strives to present a total perspective of the developmental hierarchy of language skills from early childhood through elementary.

Parenting Classes:  Systematic Training for Effective Parenting:
The STEP program provides parents with an opportunity to explore the myths of parenting as they self-reflect on their own belief systems about the ways we discipline children and why children behave as they do.  The model presented is from Adlerian psychology, the same used for Tidewater’s educational program.  The sessions last approximately 1.5 hours and child care is available for a nominal fee.  Other than the cost of the textbook and instruction binder, the school provides this program at no tuition to current parents.  This program is also available to the community should space be available.
