Why We Give to Tidewater
(Tom Rodilosso & Kierstan Boyd, parents of Sam Rodilosso)
When Sam was nearly two years old, I stumbled upon The Tidewater School by accident as I was seeking directions to the Montessori School that was nearby at the time. Nancy greeted me at the door, and as I explained that I was looking for the Montessori school, she smiled and suggested I look around Tidewater before leaving. After that visit, I knew that Sam was destined to join the Tidewater community for pre-K.
As a “Montessori Kid” myself, I was anxious for Sam to find as nurturing, stimulating and respectful environment for learning as I had enjoyed. The fact that Tidewater relies on many aspects of the Montessori tradition is a large part of the draw for me. When my husband, Tom, was introduced to the school, it was clear to him as well that this was not a static, traditional learning environment but one that encourages growth and exploration on so many levels.
From the moment Sam joined Tidewater, it was evident that this school was the perfect fit for him. He finds joy in learning about science, the world around him, and traditions of many cultures. He is confident, happy and trusting, and feels he can do anything he sets his mind to—including being an “Everologist” …his name for a “scientist of everything.”
Tom and I realize the value of education, and believe that a love of learning has to be cultivated as early as possible. We are both children of teachers, and we are well aware that tuition alone can’t provide everything we assume will be provided for Sam and the rest of the Tidewater community. That’s why we give what we can to the Circle of Friends. We believe that very dollar given to Tidewater is an investment in a generation of thoughtful, compassionate and inquisitive children.
