Parent Seminars:

The Tidewater School provides a supportive team approach for the education of children.  Parents and Staff work together in this effort.  It is imperative that parents attend the seminars in order to fully understand the instruction and learning process, the progression and presentation of the curriculum and the role of the environment and materials offered at The Tidewater School. The success of the child is dependent upon our active roles.  This unified approach enables children to have consistency and support from the adults who guide their learning at home and at school.

Seminar I:  Orientation to The Tidewater School

August 19, 2009, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Parents only,

to be held at the Calvert Library in Prince Frederick.

This is an essential session for all families, whether new or old friends in our Tidewater Community. It is at this gathering, both social and serious in tone, that we refresh our knowledge of philosophy, policies and procedures. This session provides a comprehensive overview of the school and will provide an opportunity for answers to questions.

Seminar II:  Educational Seminar

Date TBA

The Tidewater School offers a comprehensive examination of each child with respect for individual strengths and weaknesses without need of labeling or grouping.  This seminar will provide insights for why this model works and why children deserve far greater respect than the limitations of test scores.

Seminar III

Part One - The Silent Journey

February 5, 2010, 7 pm:  An Evening for Parents

On this evening, you will be invited to take a silent journey through your child's classroom.  It is a mystical evening of discovery, one that is sure to delight your senses and validate your investment in this excellent educational program.

  Part Two - The Destination

February 6, 2010, 9 am - noon

Now, we will talk about the mystical journey that you experienced the night before.

Systematic Training for Effective Parenting

Weekly Seminar Sessions on Thursday evenings

Jan. 28, 2010 - February 25, 2010, from 6:30 - 8 p.m.

The STEP program will provide parents with an opportunity to explore the myths of parenting as they self-reflect on their own belief systems about the ways we discipline children and why children behave as they do.  The model presented is an Adlerian model, one that is the same used for Tidewater's discipline approach with children.  The sessions last approximately 1.5 hours and child care is available for a nominal fee.  The only other fee for the course is the cost of textbooks, usually around $25.00.

The following seminars are offered on a request basis and alternate years.

Seminar IV:  Math Seminar

This session will provide ALL families with insight into the math program and respect for the process learning of children as they first manipulate, then graduate into higher level operations.  This seminar's overview provides a start-to-finish examination of math at The Tidewater School and is a must for parents who long to support their child's natural development of logical deductive reasoning skills.

Seminar V:  Reading and Language

The world of reading and language involves much more than the written word.  Once again, the staff will strive to present a total perspective of the developmental hierarchy of language skills from early childhood through elementary.
